WHY USE EMDR?

During EMDR, you’ll focus on a specific memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation,
which might involve:

Eye Movements: Following a light bar back and forth

Tapping: A theratapper device or you alternating taps on each side of your body

Sounds: Listening to tones alternating between your ears.

This process helps the brain reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional impact

Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing is a structured therapy that encourages someone to briefly focus on the trauma memory while moving your eyes side to side, which is associated with a reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. I will work with you to create safety so that you can process your trauma and heal. If you have a memory that you’d like to process through EMDR, I am trained to help you resolve it.

EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing the emotions, thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing process. It is effective because often can’t get to cortisol stress hormones through cognitive talk therapy.

EMDR therapy is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies.

Here are Benefits with EMDR Counseling:

Faster Symptom Relief: Many people notice reductions in symptoms quickly.
Less Talking Required: For those who find talking about trauma difficult, EMDR can be an alternative.
Long-Lasting Results: EMDR changes the way your brain processes the memory,
helping it to stay less distressing even after treatment.

EMDR is a state of the art tool to help you get relief from unresolved trauma

What you are doing with EMDR is moving your eyes side-to-side while you are thinking about a negative stressful situation related to your trauma. Doing these eye movements seems to discharge the negative energy that a person has attached to the thoughts. If you have a memory that you’d like to process through EMDR, I am trained to help you resolve it.  I will work with you to create safety so that you can process your trauma and heal.  If you’d like to find out more about EMDR and trauma therapy, call.
In a study comparing EMDR with Prozac, the researchers found that the group on Prozac did slightly better than a control group that received a sugar pill. With the placebo group about 30-42 percent showed improvement. The Prozac group had 35-57 percent showing improvement. With EMDR, the patients didn’t just improve. The researchers found eight months after the EMDR treatments stopped that 60% of the patients were completely cured while only 1 in 10 of the Prozac patients were  cured. Also, please note the patient’s taking Prozac could only maintain their improvement by continuing to take Prozac. The researchers also found that EMDR worked best on traumatic events that occured when the patient was an adult. Both EMDR and Prozac were quite a bit less effective for childhood trauma.
For individuals who are experiencing military related PTSD, the researchers found that 12 EMDR sessions were needed to assist the patients in healing. EMDR is an approved treatement by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Example of how EMDR can help

“A few years ago I underwent EMDR. I was skeptical of course. At this point in time, however, I see that it saved my marriage, my sanity and my relationship with my children. I was suffering from PTSD after experiencing much loss and never even realized that’s what stood in the way of a healthy life. It’s been a wonderful treatment and more people should be informed about it. I was lucky to run across it by accident.”

After Death Communication Can Help

When you're grieving a pet one of the ways you can help yourself mourn the loss is using after death communication (ADC). This is a modified EMDR process that helps grieving individuals dramatically reduce the deep sadness and trauma often associated with a death.

What can I expect from an EMDR session

EMDR therapy follows a structured, 8-phase approach:

History and Treatment Planning: Your therapist will learn about your history and
identify memories or issues to target in EMDR.

Preparation: You’ll learn relaxation and coping skills to handle any intense feelings that
may come up.

Assessment: You’ll choose a specific memory to focus on, identifying images, thoughts,
feelings, and sensations related to it.

Desensitization: While recalling the memory, you’ll engage in bilateral stimulation (like
eye movements) to reduce the memory’s emotional charge.

Installation: Your therapist will guide you in linking positive beliefs with the memory to
replace any negative beliefs (e.g., “I am safe now” instead of “I am powerless”).

Body Scan: You’ll observe any remaining physical tension or discomfort related to the
memory and continue processing if needed.

Closure: Each session ends with grounding techniques, so you leave feeling safe and
centered.

Re-evaluation: In following sessions, your therapist will check to see how you’re feeling
about the processed memory and any other issues.

The subconscious is where real change happens that lasts long-term. Our subconscious mind is an awareness that is just below the surface. These are the thoughts and memories that are not readily available to the conscious mind. The first 5-6 years of your life are down there. Events or experiences in the last few days, weeks or months are held in the subconscious. For example, you can remember the last time you went to the movies. Unless the experience is repressed for some reason it is recoverable at will. One can be going about the day to day affairs of their life and not be readily aware of this subconscious influence. It is usually not subconscious memories and feelings that create conflict between our conscious thoughts and desires. Rather it is something called ambivalence lurking in the inner world that generates the disconnect. The unconscious mind is lies beneath the subconscious. What was the first solid food you ate after liquids? You would not be able to find that out easily. That memory is way down below the subconscious in the unconscious.

Hypnosis Helps

Hypnotherapy is an effective and speedy means of working with the mind. It makes use of the natural techniques of hypnosis to gain swift access to deeply rooted anxieties and problems. I practice a technique called the “Dive,” which identifies & integrates thoughts, feelings, & sensations. New & old situations are resolved. It leads clients back to their center.
